The Governing Body of the Northern School of Art is responsible for the educational character and strategic direction of the College, determines policy and monitors the performance of the College. The Corporation consists of 17 Governors from a wide variety of backgrounds, including staff and students, and their experience and strategic skills make a vital contribution to the continuing development of the College.
The Northern School of Art is the only educational institution in the north east devoted to art and design. The majority of the staff are practising artists, designers and artisans. Our alumni include Ridley Scott, director of Alien and Blade Runner, car designer Keith Patterson and artist Mackenzie Thorpe. As one of the few specialist art and design institutions in the country, the College has a strong reputation, but one that is known to a narrow group of educators and practitioners in the creative sector. The College's vision is therefore: "To gain national recognition as a leading provider of creative education". The College’s Mission Statement is at the heart of what the Governing Body and College Leadership Team are trying to achieve: "Exceptional education for creative careers." We are all very proud of the development of our student accommodation for first year HE students. A purpose-built 56-room facility has already been built on the corner of Tower Street and Surtees Street, only a minute from the College, and was opened in 2014. A 25-bed student accommodation facility has also been set up, created in newly-refurbished premises in Lime Crescent to cater with for the huge demand for places at the growing art school campus in Hartlepool. There is also great excitement with the proposed development of an exciting new multi-million pound investment studio and gallery facility in Hartlepool to support study on degree courses. This will see the creation of purpose-built space for a new campus in Church Street in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council.
