Since graduating with a BA (Hons) Acting for Stage & Screen in 2022, Joseph Casling has built a professional career as an actor, clown and theatremaker, working across theatre, screen and live performance.

Joseph has worked professionally across a range of productions and mediums, with credits including work with Elysium Theatre, Theatre Space North East and Warner Bros. Entertainment. His career has allowed him to develop experience across different forms of performance, while continuing to build his own practice as a performer and theatre-maker.

A significant part of Joseph’s creative practice is his award-winning clown show Conked Out, which he has toured to audiences while developing his work as an independent performer. The production has received Arts Council England funding on two occasions, supporting Joseph in the continued development and touring of the show.

This funding also enabled Joseph to undertake specialist training at École Philippe Gaulier, the renowned French theatre school founded by Philippe Gaulier. There, he explored clowning, bouffon, physical theatre and performance, developing his skills under one of the world’s most influential contemporary theatre teachers.

The experience added another dimension to Joseph’s practice, allowing him to develop his understanding of clowning and physical performance in an intensive international training environment. He has continued to incorporate these approaches into his own work as a performer and creator.

Alongside his independent theatre work, Joseph continues to work professionally as an actor, building experience across theatre and screen while developing original performance work. His career demonstrates how an Acting for Stage & Screen degree can provide a foundation for a varied creative practice that extends beyond conventional acting roles into clowning, devising, theatre-making and independent performance.

“The Northern School of Art was and still is a hub of creativity for me, who are immensely supportive of me and my progression to this day. They formed who I am as an artist, teaching me to work hard, lead with kindness and to never give up.”
