Since graduating with a BA (Hons) Acting for Stage & Screen in 2022 and an MA in Directing & Theatre Making in 2023, both from The Northern School of Art, Joseph Casling has built a professional career as an actor, clown and theatremaker, working across theatre, screen and live performance.
Joseph has worked professionally across a range of productions and mediums, with credits including work with Elysium Theatre, Theatre Space North East and Warner Bros. Entertainment. He also co-created the short film Frame x Frame with fellow Northern School of Art alumni, which was shortlisted for the AIMAFF Film Festival in 2023.
A significant part of Joseph’s creative practice is his award-winning clown show Conked Out, which won the ARC Award in 2021 and has received Arts Council England funding on two occasions, supporting its continued development and touring.
This funding also enabled Joseph to undertake specialist training at École Philippe Gaulier, the renowned Paris theatre school founded by Philippe Gaulier, where he explored clowning, bouffon and physical theatre.
“The Northern School of Art was and still is a hub of creativity for me, who are immensely supportive of me and my progression to this day. They formed who I am as an artist, teaching me to work hard, lead with kindness and never to give up.”
