Since graduating from The Northern School of Art’s BA (Hons) Fine Art course, Liv Askwith has developed a career across contemporary art, curation, marketing and creative project development.
Her interest in the wider arts sector developed alongside her own practice, leading her to explore opportunities beyond the studio. She went on to study MA Design History and has gained experience in exhibition curation, gallery management, arts marketing and working with artists, developing an understanding of both the creative and organisational sides of the visual arts.
Liv has worked with galleries and creative organisations to support exhibitions, from coordinating artists and artwork installations to developing marketing and promotional activity. Her experience includes working with artists from the North East and internationally, giving her insight into the different stages involved in developing and presenting contemporary art.
Alongside her work in the arts sector, Liv has been involved in creative projects that aim to support and showcase emerging and underrepresented artists. Her work with TART, a platform celebrating working-class creatives in the North East, has included contributing to a magazine and podcast exploring visual art, film, interviews and other creative subjects.
Liv has also continued to develop her own artistic practice, exploring themes including hyper-femininity and art history. Her experience across both artistic and curatorial practice has allowed her to build a career that combines making, organising and promoting creative work.
Reflecting on the impact of her time at The Northern School of Art, Liv said:
“I literally would not have this job without going to the Northern School of Art. I think a lot of the ways the Fine Art course is designed really help to prepare you for working in industry.”
Liv’s career demonstrates the range of opportunities available to Fine Art graduates, with her experience spanning artistic practice, curation, gallery work, marketing and creative community development.
