Since graduating from The Northern School of Art’s BA (Hons) Modelmaking and VFX course, Michael Coyle has developed a career as a modelmaker, fabricator and prop maker, working across film and television as well as events, opera and replica commissions.

Michael had already developed experience in modelmaking before joining the School, turning his hobby into a career and building skills in sculpting, leatherwork, set pieces, resin casting and mould making. During his time at The Northern School of Art, he gained further industry experience, including work experience on Sky Atlantic’s Britannia, before contributing to short films including She Lives Alone and Lore.

His work in film and television has included art department and prop-making roles on productions including The Wilds, Dead Canny, Vera, The Feud and Smoggie Queens. His work has involved creating, sourcing and managing props, as well as producing bespoke pieces for productions. On The Wilds, Michael worked as Prop Master, overseeing the sourcing and making of props, including a large MDF rabbit sculpture designed to appear as rusty metal on screen.

Alongside his screen work, Michael continues to develop his own prop and replica pieces through Mutant Effects, creating sculpted and 3D-printed pieces, cosplay props, replica items and practical effects.

Michael’s career combines traditional modelmaking and fabrication with practical effects and prop making, allowing him to work across a diverse range of creative projects and industries.
