Niki Widynska has continued to develop her painting practice since graduating from the BA (Hons) Fine Art course at The Northern School of Art, going on to postgraduate study in Arts Practice at the School while exhibiting her work and taking part in creative projects.
“Art for me became a voice before it became a career,” Niki has said of her practice, which has developed from a focus on representation towards a visual language combining realism and abstraction, with the human figure often at the centre of her work. Influenced by the drama and composition of Baroque art, she uses large-scale canvases, dramatic lighting and expressive brushwork to explore themes including pain, desire, loneliness and intimacy.
Niki has exhibited at the Heritage Gallery and was selected for the Ferens Art Gallery Open Exhibition, where she also took part in a recorded interview discussing her work. She has contributed to Middlesbrough Art Week and worked on a public art project with Hartlepool Borough Council.
She has also gained experience in the wider creative sector through an internship with Tees Valley Combined Authority’s Creative Place team, working on projects including Artists of the Year.
