STATEMENT FROM CLEVELAND COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN IN RESPONSE TO BBC SURVEY ON REDUCTION OF CREATIVE ARTS SUBJECTS

Following today’s (Tuesday 30 Jan) report from the BBC on a survey which suggests that creative arts subjects are being cut back in many secondary schools, Pat Chapman, Vice Principal at Cleveland College of Art and Design said:

“The decline in art and design teaching in schools is a serious concern for the UK economy. The creative sector is worth £92Bn each year and employs 1 in 11 people in the workforce. It is predicted that the sector, which has grown at twice the average rate for the UK, will need around 900,000 graduate level new employees by 2022. If we lose the pipeline of young people coming out of school having studied creative subjects, then it will be a real challenge to find the young people to train and fill those jobs.”
