Since graduating from The Northern School of Art’s BA (Hons) Film, TV and Theatre Production course, Rory Norton has built a career working across film, television and live production, while developing his own creative business alongside fellow alumni from the course.
Rory’s experience spans a broad range of productions, including feature films, short films, music videos, documentaries, commercials, live event recordings and promotional content. This variety has allowed him to work across different areas of production and develop a versatile skill set within the screen industries.
His credits include the feature film Christmas & Chaos, starring Jason Isaacs and directed by Jamie Adams, as well as Smoggie Queens, working on its second series. He has also worked on high-end commercial productions for luxury hotels overseas, gaining experience of working on location and delivering creative content for commercial clients.
Another highlight of Rory’s career has been Stepney Western, a BFI Doc Society Fund-supported documentary by artist and filmmaker Harry Lawson. The project explored the lives of young inner-city horse riders from Stepney Bank Stables in Newcastle, combining documentary footage, archival material and experimental filmmaking. Stepney Western was exhibited at Newcastle Contemporary Art as part of a wider exhibition and subsequently screened at the Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival.
Alongside working on individual productions, Rory has continued to develop his own business with two fellow Northern School of Art alumni. This combination of freelance production work and running a creative business has allowed him to work across a particularly wide range of projects, from independent films and documentaries to commercial campaigns and live events.
Rory’s career demonstrates the breadth of opportunities available to Film, TV and Theatre Production graduates. His experience across different formats, scales and types of production highlights the versatility required to build a career within the screen industries, while his work with fellow alumni demonstrates the value of developing creative networks that can continue beyond graduation.
