Sophie Johnston win the Photography Achievement Award 2024!
The Photography Achievement Award recognises the student that has displayed a particular level of commitment and dedication to their practice and study of photography whilst at the school. The award celebrates ability, development and progress. This year the award was presented to student Sophie Johnston.
Lecturers commented that she won the award because “this student is a key member of her cohort and has consistently engaged with all aspects of the programme by proving that hard work dedication and creativity do prevail. She has challenged not only her photography but herself on this journey.”
We spoke to Sophie, from Middlesbrough to find out more about her practice and award win. Scroll to find out more:
- Why did you choose to study at The Northern School of Art?
I joined because of the industry standard facilities and equipment the school offers. Due to the smaller class sizes I also had the opportunity to work closely with fellow creatives and lecturers.
- How did you find your degree programme?
I really enjoyed the past 3 years on my programme and have had some amazing opportunities secured with the support of my lecturers. They have helped me and my photography flourish.
- Tell us about your FMP project!
For my FMP I worked with Steel River Drinks, an up and coming business in the North East. My series is more than just a story of gin production it looks deeper into the people and creation of gin. I captured key moments in the distilling process and abstract shots to capture the essence of the business. My work aims to show the often overlooked love and effort that goes into creating a product. My other work featured shows the essence of diverse trainers against a minimalist background. I wanted to highlight the artistry involved in trainers that I personally admire. Over the years trainers have become more than just footwear evolving into pieces of art.
- You are one of our award winners, how did it feel to win your award?
I took a lot of pride in winning this award as there was a lot of amazing photographers in my class. I can be overly critical of my work and receiving this award justifies the three years of hard work and dedication that I often overlook. I’m very grateful to my lecturers for choosing me to receive this award as well as my peers for helping me through my journey as a photographer at The Northern School of Art.
- What your favourite memory of your time at school?
One of my favourite memories is towards the end of my studies where my class and I all got involved preparing for our degree show. It’s a pinnacle point for everyone in my class and it shows the effort we have all put in into one moment. My time at The Northern School of Art has introduced me to lifelong friends that I am very grateful for.
- What are you doing next and what are your plans & ambitions for the future:
The next for me is to do the MA Arts Practice at the school to further develop my craft. It will also help me to become a lecturer of photography in the future.
- Any advice for future students applying for the same course as you:
I’d advise new students to make the most out of the time you spend here and push yourself for opportunities that arise. Make use of the facilities and resources and experiment with your photography.
