Meet our 2022 Award Winners – Oscar W. Fitchett BA (Hons) Film, TV & Theatre Production

Find out more about Film, TV & Theatre Production graduate Oscar Fitchett, the winner of The Northern School of Art’s Gavin Murphy Achievement Award (Film Student of the Year Award 2022).

This award is given to the student who has displayed an excellent attitude in helping others and commitment to excellence throughout their studies. This reflects the memory of Gavin Murphy, a former student and staff member who would always go the extra mile to help others in pursuit of their dreams.

What is your home town and which school/college did you join the School from?

Hartlepool, Hartlepool College of Further Education.

Why did you choose to study at The Northern School of Art?

I chose to study at The Northern School of Art because of the facilities and equipment the school provides, along with the opportunities that come with that to create many projects throughout the three-years.

What’s your favourite memory of your time at the School (academically as well as socially!)

My favourite memory is both academic and social, attending the Northern Film Festival that our class organised to watch all our Final Major Projects on a cinema screen at ARC Stockton; truly a special moment to see all our hard work pay off in such a celebratory night.

What are you doing next and what are your plans/ambitions for the future?

What the immediate future holds for me is driving lessons, this is to help me in venturing into the world of freelance filmmaking and applying for as many roles that I can within the North-East film industry. This will also go alongside me continuing to develop and make my own short films and projects that will hopefully elevate me to narrative feature filmmaking.

Any advice for future students applying for the same course as you?

Advice that I would give to future students is to not take for granted the time that you spend in university, it is a place where you will truly flourish into not only the creative professional you want to be but also into the person you want to be. The last thing you want to happen is getting to graduation and thinking “wow, I wish I did it better”.
