The Creative Placement Programme at The Northern School of Art is a selective, studio-based experience for Year 11 students who are serious about progressing into specialist creative education.

Unlike traditional work experience, this programme is school-nominated and application-based, ensuring that places are offered to students who demonstrate strong creative engagement, motivation, and interest in continuing their studies in art, design, and fashion.

Placements are prioritised for students interested in:

• A-Level Pathway
• Graphics
• Textiles
• Fashion
• Costume

What Is a Creative Placement?

A Creative Placement gives students the opportunity to spend 1–3 days immersed in a real college studio environment, working alongside current students and academic staff.

Participants will:

• Respond to a course-specific creative brief
• Develop portfolio-ready work
• Receive feedback from tutors and students
• Experience studio-based teaching and creative culture
• Learn about interview expectations and progression routes

This is designed to help students make informed decisions about their next steps — and to prepare them for successful applications and interviews.

Who Can Apply?

This programme is for:

• Year 11 students with a strong interest in creative subjects
• Pupils actively developing a GCSE sketchbook or portfolio
• Students considering progression into post-16 creative study at The Northern School of Art

All placements are nominated by schools and reviewed by our recruitment and course teams.

How the Application Process Works

1. School nomination – A teacher or careers lead nominates 3–5 students per placement group
2. Creative review – We review course interest, creative engagement, and supporting work
3. Confirmation – Successful schools and students receive a welcome pack and placement dates

Places are limited and offered on a selective basis.

Placement Details

• Duration: 1–3 days
• Times: 9:30am–2:30pm
• Group Size: 3–5 students per school
• Location: The Northern School of Art (Middlesbrough / Hartlepool campuses)
• Availability: Spring–Early Summer 2026 (subject to course and studio capacity)
