Fran brings over 30 years of professional experience to the Costume department, which she joined in 2017. Throughout her career, she has continually developed her professional practice through hands-on work, academic research, and the pursuit of additional qualifications—including earning her PGCE.

Drawing on her expertise in pattern drafting, fine sewing, and garment construction, Fran plays a key role in supporting students’ learning and contributing to the creation of costumes for a range of live projects. She delivers technical demonstrations across all modules and levels of the BA (Hons) Costume Interpretation with Design course, while also helping to maintain a safe and productive working environment on campus.

Fran’s career in costume construction began in 1986, rooted in a decade-long background in tailoring. She was one of the few dressmakers in the North East of England producing bespoke mess dress uniforms for military clients both in the UK and internationally. Her extensive industry experience also includes co-owning a successful costume business, further enriching her contribution to the department.

Fran is a skilled technician specialising in costume design and construction, blending technical expertise with creativity to bring concepts to life. She stays up-to-date with the latest industry techniques to ensure her skills remain current and relevant. In her role, Fran creates teaching aids and utilises the extensive costume archive to enrich students’ learning experiences. She also researches and plans workshops, which she then delivers to students, helping them gain practical insights into costume craftsmanship and design. Currently, Fran is working towards her Higher Education Academy (HEA) fellowship, further enhancing her teaching and professional practice.
