John has been creating models and props for film since the late 1980s, starting out making special effects for home video horror movies and progressing to Hollywood blockbusters by the early 2000s, occasionally meeting his heroes whilst exhibiting prop and set recreations at comic conventions. John has worked in television, independent short films, theatre and animation, with experience in front of the camera, performing and puppeteering, although he specialises in building the worlds that appear onscreen, be it a prop, miniature or a set design.
John has made many contacts in the modelmaking and film industry from a career spanning almost thirty years, starting out as a freelance architectural, exhibition and prototype model maker, travelling to China when he was a new product development manager for a novelty giftware company, and spending nearly a decade as a member of BA (hons) Production Design for Stage and Screen team.
In 2018, The Northern School of Art launched the BA (hons) Modelmaking programme; this exciting lecturing role allows John to pass on his years of practical model making experience and collaborate with Set Design, Film, Costume and Acting students within the Stage and Screen Faculty.
John is constantly expanding his skillsets and exploring innovative solutions to ever-more intricate problems, navigating a path through disruptive technology, creation through limitation and sustainable practices. John enjoys learning, both through his own students’ experiences and successes and currently as a mature student himself, completing his Masters in VFX in January 2026.
