Mike Boyle is a Senior Lecturer and practitioner on the BA (Hons) Film, Television and Theatre Production degree at The Northern School of Art — a programme they conceived, authored, and successfully validated. They hold a BA (Hons) in Theatre, Media and Drama from the University of Glamorgan, a PGCE from Middlesbrough College, and are a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE).
With a career spanning theatre, film, and television, Mike Boyle brings extensive industry experience into their teaching and research. They co-founded and directed a theatre company, working as a director, writer, and performer, before moving into screen production as a producer/director within the independent sector. Their professional work includes numerous roles at the BBC, where they contributed as an Assistant Producer, Independent Director, and Creative Producer within the Corporation’s marketing department. Alongside this, they have developed a successful freelance career as a corporate filmmaker, producing and directing projects across a variety of sectors.
Beyond their academic role, Mike remains actively engaged in the development of the regional screen industries. They have acted as a consultant on the establishment of a proposed film investment fund and served as an advisor on the creation of a potential film production company. They were also instrumental in the early conceptualisation and development of The Northern Studios, helping to bridge professional screen production and higher education in the North East.
