Richard Allaway is an artist and researcher whose practice spans experimental photography, installation, and site-specific performance. His work is deeply rooted in the rural landscapes of northern England, where walking becomes both a creative act and a research method. Through these embodied journeys, Richard explores how soil and terrain hold speculative energies and unseen networks that shape ecological relationships.

Currently undertaking a practice-based PhD at the University of Huddersfield, Richard investigates how intimate walking experiences can reveal these hidden systems and how they might be translated into installation art. His methodology, which he terms Autoethnographic Unearthing, combines sensory engagement with scientific and artistic processes, such as soil chromatography, analogue photography, and live earth batteries, to create work that responds to the invisible electrical energies beneath our feet.

Richard’s research and practice have been shared widely through exhibitions and conferences across the UK and internationally, including Nature-Arts Interconnections at West University of Timișoara, Romania, and New Aesthetic Expressions: The Social Role of Art at Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland. His work seeks to reframe soil as a communicative system, exploring how human and non-human relationships can foster care, collaboration, and new ways of understanding the land.
