Tony’s current work is divided between freelance design work and lecturing at The Northern School of Art. His work has focused on theatre design for theatre companies such as Leeds Youth Opera, designing Foust, Louisa Miller and Benjamin Britten’s Paul Bunyan. Theatre work has included the world premiere of Bernard J Taylor’s musical ‘Nosferatu the Vampire’ for the Theatre Royal, Eastbourne.

Freelance work includes digital illustration and digital model making for advertising agencies and publishers. Working from a small studio in Skelton in Cleveland. Work is executed using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Recently, studio work has been focusing on the development of 3D computer modelling, leading to some exciting and challenging work. Clients include Liftable, a stair lift manufacturer on Teesside, developing computer models for promotional literature. Powergen Technology is developing a range of animated models to promote new technology used in power stations. Work for Newcastle-based ‘Standing Stone Productions’ led to a computer-generated TV studio model and over 100 short animated scenes. These were then edited by film production company ‘Mere Mortals’ into an eight-minute TV pilot to promote a new TV game show which the company is currently pitching to TV companies internationally.

Studio work also includes artwork for exhibitions and galleries, book illustration and promotional graphics. Tony has exhibited and sold work nationally and internationally, and his work explores new techniques and new media. The result of which usually leads to the combination of ideas from a number of different disciplines.

His experience here allows him to work with undergraduates at all levels who are studying modelmaking and stage design using both traditional workshop methods and computer-aided modelling.

Research Interests & Projects / Professional Activity / Publications/ Awards / Exhibitions / Media Coverage:

Tony has recently achieved the status of Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. FHEA. Tony’s initial research work was published as a paper and on the school’s PAD (Perspectives in Art and Design) website in 2017. Titled ‘The Journey: A Practical Investigation into the Development of Pattern and Texture for Use in 3D Models’, here transparent and translucent images were mixed with bump maps and mapped to digital models to create, well, art! The results of which have been extensively used in his teaching ever since. Tony is currently working on mapping his illustration work to digital models and producing broadcast-quality rendering for digital animation. This is using single TIFF files, which can then be composited in Adobe Premiere to produce an animation. Ongoing and the development is slow due to a busy work schedule and a slow computer, but the created images have been exhibited in exhibitions around the country and through social media, see….
