Theo Scott is a multi-award-winning director and freelance illustrator with over nine years of industry experience across animation, film, and design.
His freelance career began with a commission from Channel 4 to write and direct his debut short film, an early milestone that established his distinctive voice in the animation world. Since then, Theo has developed a diverse body of work, creating innovative short films in both 2D and 3D. Notably, he directed a project using cutting-edge machine learning image processing techniques for Mercury Prize winner Gwilym Sainsbury of Alt-J. Theo’s most recent film, ‘Cuties’, was commissioned by the British Film Institute and went on to win multiple awards, screening at prestigious festivals including Annecy, Sitges, and MAF. His accolades include the Royal Television Society’s Award for Professional Excellence in Animation and ‘Best Animated Film’ at the British Short Film Awards.
Alongside his filmmaking, Theo works as a freelance designer and illustrator. His commercial clients include Private Eye magazine, and his illustration work has been exhibited internationally in New York, Taiwan, and Japan.
He is currently developing a new funded animated film that blends 2D and 3D techniques. His practice spans both traditional and digital media, with a particular interest in experimental storytelling and contemporary visual styles.
Research Interests & Projects / Professional Activity / Publications/ Awards / Exhibitions / Media Coverage:
Thoe is currently putting all his effort into developing a funded animated short that explores montage in animation, combining 2D, 3D, and tracked live action footage. As part of this, he’s experimenting with AI-based style transfer techniques (such as Disco Diffusion) and using Mandelbulb to generate infinite ‘3D’ fractals rendered in a 2D software.
His research interests include hybrid animation workflows, the intersection of traditional and digital image-making, and the creative use of machine learning in storytelling.
While Theo is not yet able to name the funder publicly due to pending paperwork, the film is fully funded and currently the focus of his ongoing creative and research efforts.
