BA (Hons) Textiles Student Of The Year 2025 Frances Fletcher!
Graduate Frances Fletcher is the recipient of The Textiles Student of the Year 2025! The award recognises the overall performance, approach to studying and achievement of graduating students from the BA (Hons) Textiles and Surface Design degree programme.
Frances chose to study at the school because she “loved the facilities, especially the print rooms and it is close to my hometown. I absolutely loved studying my degree. I have had loads of opportunities since leaving such as internships and interviews as well as talking to industry professionals in London. The sessions are always so much fun and the staff are always super helpful and have loads of knowledge about the industry. They help prepare you with what you need to know for leaving.”
Her FMP project “is based on the symbolism of nature in Greek Mythology where I explored traditional and modern techniques from screen printing through to digital printing. My favourite technique used was screen printing for my silk twill scarves as it’s a challenging technique and can be temperamental at times. However, after sampling, my final three scarves worked very well and the colours were the outcome I wanted. For my digital work, I used all my hand rendered drawings scanned in to photoshop to create a collection of maximalist repeats for fashion fabrics.”
“My final major project ‘wild Greek Flora’ is based on the symbolism of Nature in Greek Mythology. The initial starting point developed from my travels to Greek islands throughout previous summers, each connecting to happy memories, creating a sense of nostalgia. This collection explores both traditional and modern techniques, from screen printing through to digital pattern design focusing on print for fashion fabrics. It aims to captivate the stories and the symbolism of Greek mythology through exploring the beauty, power, and mystique of nature.”
Reflecting on her three years at the school she said, “my favourite memory was when I made my first repeat 3 metre length. It was amazing to see it come together from the initial drawing to using pigments and binder on fabric. My favourite thing to do is watch the sunrise at season Carew before going to uni.”
Her next steps include “applying to design studios as well as having an internship. I also aim to sell some work freelance and open to the idea of starting a business.”
