Denis Dunning who has over 30 years of experience in the photographic industry and teaching in Further and Higher Education, is running Photography evening classes in our studios at The Northern School of Art. He has an MA in Photography (University of Sunderland), an MA in Creative Multimedia (University of Teesside). Denis is highly creative and passionate about photography in both analogue and digital formats. He has a wealth of knowledge gained from his many years of experience and is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and skills with the next generation of Photographers to equip them for further study and/or a career in Photography.

1. Introduction to Digital Photography
This 10 week course will begin on Monday 24th September and end on Monday 26th November 2018.
Sessions will run weekly at HE Campus at 1 Church Street, Hartlepool, from 18:00 – 20:00.
Course fee = £150
This exciting new course is aimed at individuals with an interest in digital photography wishing to develop their skills in digital image capture and enhancement. The course allows learners to develop their understanding of digital cameras, workflow and image processing software. The classes will be a mixture of studio based teaching, lectures, seminars, demonstrations, workshops, critiques and independent learning through set project briefs and tasks.
You will learn the basics of digital photography which includes:
• Digital camera controls, menus and settings
• Exposure modes
• Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO
• White Balance
• Lenses
• Depth of Field
• Digital workflow from capture to output
• Basic image enhancement and manipulation using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop
• Creative composition and visual language
Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress onto one of our other short courses in Digital Photography (more information on future courses will be available soon).

2. NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Photography
Wednesday 26th September 2018 (HE WK1) until Wednesday 29th May 2019 (32 Weeks in Total). This course is delivered via weekly sessions at HE Campus at 1 Church Street, Hartlepool, running from 18:00 – 20:30.

Qualification Fee = £53.00

This QCF qualification is aimed at individuals wishing to develop an understanding of photographic processes and the photo imaging industry. The qualification allows learners to understand and develop skills enabling them to take and manipulate images using a range of industry standard equipment, techniques and image processing software. Learners will learn the basics of safe working practices and have the opportunity to explore in detail the following areas of photography: dark room, studio, location, commercial, documentary and experimental and alternative processes. Learners will also gain knowledge and understanding of the different roles and employment opportunities available within the photo imaging industry. They’ll gain a basic understanding of the legislation relevant to photographic practice, including copyright, intellectual property and photographers rights. This will help prepare learners for progression into employment or further learning.
The objective of this qualification is to support learners to progress into employment or self employment within the industry, or onto further qualifications at Level 3 in creative subjects such as photography, art and design, craft, animation and moving image production.
The classes will be a mixture of studio based teaching, lectures, seminars, demonstrations, workshops, critiques and independent learning through set project briefs and tasks.
This qualification consists of 3 core units, of which the learner will complete 2.
• Explore photographic equipment, techniques, materials and resources (F/506/0069)
• Develop and adapt photographic ideas (T/506/0070)
• Introduction to the photo imaging industry (A/506/0071)
Learners must also choose at least one unit from the following optional units:
• Darkroom processing and printing
• Studio photography
• Location photography
• Commercial photography
• Documentary photography
• Experimental and alternative process photography
• Presenting a portfolio of photographic images

3. Portfolio Building
This 10 week course will begin on Tuesday 25th September and end on Tuesday 27th November 2018.
Sessions will run weekly at HE Campus at 1 Church Street, Hartlepool, from 18:00 – 20:00.
Course Fee = £150.00
This exciting new course is aimed at experienced photographers wishing to develop a portfolio of photographs with support and guidance from our experienced staff. If you are looking to take your photography to the next level for an exhibition or to progress into higher education – then this is the course for you. You will have access to a range of industry standard photographic equipment and image processing software to aid in the development of a professional portfolio. There is an emphasis on self-directed study supported by regular workshops, plus group critique sessions to gain valuable peer feedback in the development of your work. A strong and cohesive portfolio of photographs is essential if you hope to progress in the photographic industry or enrol on one of our Degree level courses in Photography.
The classes will be a mixture of studio based teaching, lectures, seminars, demonstrations, workshops, critiques and independent learning through set project briefs and tasks.
