What’s on // Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage
The weekend of the 8th and 9th September 2018 sees the return of the Staithes Festival of Art & Heritage. Over the course of the weekend, there will be up to 85 pop up galleries open housing artwork from over 150 talented artists, as well as workshops, light displays, picture shows, live music and art talks too. At night fall, check out the outdoor, open air cinema at Kipper’s Corner!
The Northern School of Art alumni once again feature in the festival, including Lucy Addison, who as well as being a fantastic applied artist selling a vast array of beautiful products and jewellery, is the technician demonstrator on our textile courses at The Northern School of Art Middlesbrough. Lucy will be showcasing her handmade jewellery and ceramics at Sunnyside, High Barrass (number 82 on your festival map) along with the work of alumni Jess Langford, whose work is featured above. This year’s programme was designed by one of our students, Morgan Briggs. The cover painting is by Rob Shaw so be sure to head down to this great event fully supported by the staff and students from The Northern.
In the late 19th century a group that including Laura Johnson (later Dame Laura Knight), Harold Knight, Joseph Bagshawe and others came to Staithes to paint and became known as the Staithes Group of Artists, a highly significant artists’ colony. With the festival now annually booming, it is now a registered charity with all funds going back into the festival and to local good causes, with more than £7,200 raised to date.
