An article in Creative Boom, one of the most widely read platforms in the creative industries, has identified Hartlepool as “one of the UK’s most exciting creative hubs.”
Journalist Tom May visited the town recently to see the Northern School of Art-supported Northern Festival of Illustration exhibition in Hartlepool Art Gallery. He was not only very impressed with the Festival’s showcase “filling the grand Victorian gallery with world-class work from illustrators spanning five continents” but also developments in the town itself.
“Stepping into Hartlepool Art Gallery, I realised just how much the place has changed—and how quickly. The creative energy here isn’t just simmering; it’s starting to boil.”
The article goes on to highlight the School’s neighbour, The Northern Studios, as a growing film and TV production hub in Hartlepool, with the recently announced £33.5 million expansion to create new sound stages, workshops and collaborative spaces as part of the new production village as evidence that “the town’s wider regeneration plans reveal its creative muscle.”
He concludes: “This isn’t just about one impressive building. It’s about creating an entire ecosystem.”
Reflecting on some seeing some young creatives from the School comparing their sketches he adds:
“It struck me then that this—not the funding announcements, not the international submissions, not even the impressive artist lineup—is what success looks like.
A generation growing up in Hartlepool who see creativity not as something that happens elsewhere, but something that can happen here.”
