Rachel Marsh: Anjool Malde Awards 2023 Photographic Practice Winner
The Anjool Malde Photography Awards are a recognition of talent from our photography pathways. “The Anjool Maldé Memorial Trust, a UK registered charity, was set up to keep alive Anjool’s legacy of a kindred and enlivened spirit that lit up so many lives and inspired and helped others to make most of their talents. The Photography Award is an exciting addition to the current memorial awards already in place in his name and have quickly grown in prestige and have become highly coveted marks of honour with the beneficiaries going on to achieve higher and greater things. The Photography Award gives recognition for the talent of one student from the BA (Hons) Commercial Photography programme and one from BA (Hons) Photographic Practice (with Moving Image).”
Rachel Marsh, is this years Photographic Practice (with Moving Image) winner! Rachel has been presented with this award because her “practice is evolving and progressing, with an evident determination and seriousness of intent. The Trustees of the Anjool Malde Awards are delighted to acknowledge their originality, distinctiveness and technical control of materials and techniques.”

- What did you choose to study at The Northern School of Art
As a mature student with no A levels, I approached the FE college to begin my journey but they felt that I was better suited to HE so arranged for me to meet Jamie Macdonald, the course leader. I immediately felt at home at The Northern School of Art and I am very glad I made the decision to study here.
- What has been your favourite memory here?
My favourite memory is receiving my first grades and realising that I could do this university thing.
- What are your plans for after graduation?
My immediate plans involve a lot of travelling however I am planning on continuing my studies when I return and hope one day to achieve a PHD.
- What would your advice be to anyone that wants to apply to study photography?
My advice for future students looking to join the Photography programme is use the vast knowledge that the lecturers have and experiment with areas that interest you. My time at the school has been fleeting but some of the most rewarding years of my life and I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given.
