Spotlight on alumni Rachel Deakin & group exhibition Always Seen But Overlooked at Redcar Contemporary Gallery

Alumni Rachel Deakin who completed a diploma in graphics (2013) and BA (Hons) Photography in (2016) is featured in Always Seen But Overlooked alongside fellow alumni Sam Blackwood, C-DYER, Silas Field, Harry Garrens, David Maughan and Adam Shaw and other contemporary artists in a new group exhibition curated by C-Dyer at Redcar Contemporary Art Gallery which runs until March this year.
Rachel’s practice “draws inspiration from her immediate surroundings. Working across photography and moving image she explores the subtle moments where landscape and memory quietly intersect. Through paired photographic works, Rachel captures layered narratives embedded within post-industrial environments. Her work reflects on environmental fragility and the quiet persistence of change, inviting viewers to consider how we have shaped and structured the landscape.”
Speaking of her work in this exhibition she said “my work featured in the exhibition Always Seen But Overlooked 2.0 is a photograph taken at the South Gare (featured above) using black and white film and a half frame camera, I hand printed it in the darkroom as part of my AA2A residency which is an honor to be a part of. Alongside the photograph is a video piece composed of short, everyday fragments of moving image mostly filmed in Middlesbrough.”
Inspired by this quote “The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled” taken from Ways of Seeing by John Berger, this exhibition brings together 17 contemporary artists working across a range of media. The show offers a space to notice, reflect, and engage with themes, ideas and elements of our society that are often present yet overlooked.
Visitors can expect to see an array of disciplines and medium including collage, film, paintings, photography, sculpture, film and sound.
