Teesside Hospice X Northern School of Art’s Second Hand September 2025!
Our UAL Extended Diploma in Fashion students are teaming up with Teesside Hospice for Second Hand September a campaign which challenges consumers, “to say no to buying new clothes for 30 days and instead celebrate the power of second-hand fashion and all things thrifting.” This year’s campaign promises to be a “bigger, bolder, and more creative than ever” celebration of second-hand clothing and sustainable fashion.
For this exciting project students will reimagine donated pieces from Teesside Hospice shops – styling them into trendy, wearable outfits that prove second-hand doesn’t mean second-best. The project will culminate in an exclusive ticketed event which takes place on the 28th September at our Newport Road campus in Middlesbrough. The event promises to bring second-hand fashion to life, eventgoers can expect a range of activities exploring sustainable style ending with a live fashion show finale. Every item featured on the runway was once donated by the local community and has been carefully selected to inspire fresh, creative looks.

Lecturer Polly Clarkeson said “we are absolutely thrilled to be collaborating with Teesside Hospice on this exciting up-cycled fashion show and charity event here at the Northern School of Art. It’s a fantastic opportunity to support a vital local charity while giving our students invaluable real-world experience in planning and delivering a live fashion event. We’re aiming to raise as much as we can for Teesside Hospice by transforming donated items into unique, reimagined fashion pieces — all designed, created, and promoted by our talented FE students.”
“Working with Teesside Hospice on the Second Hand September show has been so much fun” commented student Tom Creevy, “it’s been great to use my creativity and passion for styling to raise money for charity.”
Working on live projects like this underpins our diploma to help students gain vital work experience, Tom said that the brief “has been really insightful into my future career.” Fellow student Ronnie Harker agreed that “working on a live brief has been extremely useful and informative of how this industry works and the type of job roles I would enjoy in the future.”
Students have worked closely with the charity on project, Senior Marketing Officer at Teesside Hospice Ellie Garrens said “We’re so excited to be working with the incredibly talented students and staff from The Northern School of Art for our Second Hand September campaign. Their passion for sustainable fashion is second to none, and we’re so grateful for their support in turning donated items from our charity shops into one-of-a-kind pieces. From the sneak peeks we’ve seen, the creations already look amazing. We can’t thank the team enough for bringing this campaign and fashion show to life and are looking forward to seeing them shine on the runway!”
