The Shades Hotel – Lynn Street View
Amy’s work looks at depicting the urban architecture of local public houses. Her paintings are a way for her to understand more about the structure. The idea of public houses, in general, dates back centuries, and it has always been a representation of social life. Today, man pubs are occupied by buildings with very effective working uses dating back to the industrial era. Her interest stems from the idea of this working structure centuries later becoming a social structure. She highlights its identity and significant of it use during that working era, and how it can become lost. All people recognize is the social use of the building. This is one of the critical drives for her work. She represents these structures on different scales, but likes to portray them on a large scale for the more finished work. This is because the architectures themselves are extensive, and there is so much detail to include in one painting.

Annabel CollinsA Tribute To My Childhood
Annabel is a multimedia artist who focuses on the visual representation of one’s identity. Her works are comparable to diaries, demonstrating various processes over long periods of time which are then reflective of her thoughts, feelings and life events. The work she is displaying, entitled ‘a Tribute to My Childhood’, is meant to overwhelm in its display of colour and mark making. The piece is a conglomeration of various processes over a long period of time, showcasing how different days, weeks and months pass and reflect visually. Annabel has been able to use various different forms of imagery, all inspired by her research into Japanese Visual Culture alongside elements of the decorative. She has persistently answered the question of how to merge the border between the abstract and the representative to create a visual identity synonymous with herself.

Annamaria KovacsUntitled 1-4
Annamaria’s practise is a marriage between painting and drawing. The monochrome colour creates an ethereal field of vision, a space she can respond to with her linear drawings. The colour is an emotional medium that emanates a certain mood. To create a colour, space is an impulsive action through which she explores it’s aesthetic qualities. She examines the relationship between intuition and logic by using two opposing processes, the fluidity of painting and the controlled drawing set by the systematic composition of the grid. The colour and the grid allow her to explore what she calls ‘suspended drawings’, a self-expression of the formal variation of delicate lines which is determined by the guidance and limitations of the grid. Within the process of repetitive drawing, she sustains a quiet but intense concentration.

Ash TomlinsonThe Fate
1. (of Orion)
2. (of Hyacinth)
3. (of Narcissus)
4. (of Tantalus)
5. (of Orpheus)
The work Ash Tomlinson creates is a dialogue between modern interpretations of Greek Mythos characterised by his unique style and vibrant expression. Orientating around the parallels of alienation and relatability, Tomlinson depicts stories we are familiar with either through experiencing them ourselves or hearing them growing up. From lost love to impossible battles to visual metaphors of mental health. His work borders on naivety as the atmosphere has more significance than the form or realism. Inspired by the works of Edvard Munch, Anselm Kiefer and Frank Auerbach, to name a few, Tomlinson aims to create emotionally charged work that carefully considers colour, composition and line. Similar to the artists he is inspired by and hopes to create a disturbing atmosphere that remains in the mind of the spectator.

Bethany HuntonRematerialize (Jennifer)
Bethany is a sculpture and installation artist that explores relationships between materials and site, as well as the theory of ‘Materiality’. Testing the properties of locally sourced materials, traditional and unconventional and developing relationships, and languages with them informs her practise. The work is described as site specific, as many of the pieces use the space they are created in and have relationships with the area. Seeking to create new and radical forms, she employs diverse methods, often working in a space and allowing the piece to take on qualities of the surroundings which in turn affects the viewers perspective of the space in which the art has been situated. Her work is often described as industrial and imposing, due to the fact her childhood was wildly dominated by industry from her family’s connections with the Steel Works and Shipyards. Artistically, she is always brought back to those innate connections.

Charlie LoveSorry We’re Closed
Don’t Forget Your Keys
Charlie finds strong influence from colour field painters such as Rothko and Truitt, performances artists like Jarratt Keys and Abramovich, and even more conceptual works from Ono. Rothko’s beliefs that colour should be the primary focus, resonates strongly within this work. She hopes to continue to make work that celebrate the variety of colour and the strong use it has in communication. She is also concerned with the stitch and uses this as a meditative and reflective quality to her practise. She believes that with her expressive painting technique it is important that her work allows room for reflection and contemplation. Her work strongly resonates with women’s work. Her paintings are messy and expressive, the stitch ensures thought and reflection; the stitch makes sense of everything. This is a woman’s role, life is messy, it’s unpredictable and emotional, it is women who make sense of this, they put it back together when it all comes undone at the seams.

Keegan GallonYours Sincerely
Keegan Gallon takes a photographic text-based practice in her work. She always had an interest in the theories of feminism and the female form. She is driven by the position of women, the inequalities and the problems faced by women today in their everyday lives. She aims to challenge people by making them consider what her work is trying to say but also how they the audience have viewed her work. Not only does she focus on challenging the audience but she also wants to empower the audience. She wants the work to be noticeable and achieves this through her bright red photographs. She uses herself, in the images she creates, as a form of empowerment whilst also “gaining her body back” through her work. Although the artist’s work is very direct, she is interested in how viewers respond to her work and what they take away from the pieces, whether this is shocked, guilt or empowerment each of these are important.

Peter CraggsUntitled
Peter creates sculptural and immersive work that experiments with shape, light and illusions. Using many techniques from laser cutting and electronics to painting woodwork, his inventiveness and unique approach to art is evident in his many vibrant pieces. Often creating work that can appear simplistic in shape, he aims to experiment how far he can take these simple forms and manipulate them to his own aesthetic. He is predominantly inspired by the everyday and how a momentary observation can progress into a full-fledged work of art. Peter hopes that through viewers observing his own work it might encourage others to embark on their own creative journey.

Shona HackettNumerous Untitled pieces
A Journey (series)
Shona’s work focuses on movement, light and psychogeography in the style of impressionism. She intends to convey the kinetic energy of the subjects in static paintings using watercolour. The process is still the same where she will draw, block in, model and detail her paintings. Shona’s aims lie in creating a mood more closely resembling a painting rather than photo-realism. The compositions are amplified by new forms and colours provided by the selective colours create the illusionistic blurred effects of passing cars and bright lights in the dark of night. Additionally, it is based on a Northern School of Art student. These new works are based on the idea of a linear journey-specifcally, the student’s journey to and from University along Church Street.

William CollettLight and Motion 1-4
Will’s work is part of the continued history of abstract art. His artwork has many meanings such as; the exploration of intimacy and the intricate connections that form the universe displayed by how the paint, texture and form combine. As well as this, the individual inflections of how he interprets colour, shape and other facets of perception. The way in which he paints and uses materials to craft a reflection of himself and the world in order to create something both aesthetically pleasing and deeply personal. His work has new meaning in the public domain and becomes that of a thought exercise, the work that he makes is a mental exercise of interpretation ultimately it is up to the audience to see what they wish to see within the work. Some will look at the work and see only shape and colour and be satisfied, others will look deeper and see that individual brushstrokes let the paint to form in such a way.
