Adam ShawIntertextuality 2022
My practice is as a painter. I paint what I see and create work on a large scale that is carefully constructed and engineered. With reference to the theories of Roland Barthes and Julia Kristeva on Intertextuality, my practice attempts to re-examine and redefine artworks of the past. It tries to create conversation for the viewer, attempting to interweave art history within the work, to refer historically through contemporizing and appropriating other artists’ works within my own – the idea is an interweaving narrative with importance placed on the viewer or reader. I seek to paint from nature without reproducing it, to use its untameable character to excite spontaneity and experimentation. The work includes references to Ophelia, The Three Graces, Venus, Boxer at Rest, Nymphs, and so on.

Chloe Smith‘Numinous-01’ (1)
The development of a non-objective aesthetic within my practice is rooted in the opinion that representation can disguise the underlying activity, or process, of making a painting. The investigation of colour and light in my compositions has resulted in a combination of the physicality of paint with the sensory quality of lighting. The use of neon and fluorescent paint paired with UV light adds another layer of intensity to the physicality of paint and colour to achieve atmospheric painterly installations. The process is plain to be seen, yet the atmosphere has the possibility to be felt; providing the viewer with a more fulfilling sensory experience.

Harry FraserA Gay’s Guide To The Galaxy 2
This work is a parody of traditional blueprints and for my degree show I have created an alien workshop, to push the alien themes I decided to create a strange language to label the blueprints with. I use a predominantly pink colour pallet to refer to the queer themes behind work and bringing the similar shade of pink I use within all my practice. I use trans representation and issues surrounding gender and create alien characters to voice an otherness. I am mainly working online on Instagram @harry_frs and post most of my work on there, usually having a pink pallet.

Josie CarterLet me know when you’re back safe
My current practice is around the subject of documenting how when women walk alone at night they message/text and using embroidery in a self aware way because its systemic relation to women, and layering this over night photography. I also create collages which are about subverting the male gaze from advertising, and objects in magazines in relation to domesticity and women. This allows me to respond to current events that have relation to feminist ideas, I do this because it is important that my work shows a wider context and is relevant. I also make pieces about current issues to show to a wider audience, as I want an end to these issues, I want a viewer of my work to learn something and create their own opinion on the topic I am showing through my work.

My practice challenges the painting and sculpture distinction, pushing the boundaries between the two. These investigations have no particular narrative but are intended to challenge notions of categorization through process-based exploration. By paring down complex ideas and presenting them in a simplified manner, materials used for painting and sculpture are utilized and fused in a variety of ways to blur traditional borders and question where the line between the two approaches exists.

Nadene Micklewright‘Printed Diptych #1’
For this piece, I used warm tones such as pink and orange with a mix of a dark cooler purple to experiment if the darker colour would print better than the lighter colour. The technique included painting the first piece using the acrylic colours I already premixed ready for the piece, then working fast to ensure the paint didn’t dry before printing the two canvases together to complete the printing process. I then ran my hand over the back of the canvas to ensure a more solid print and pick up any textures and brushstroke marks, pressing the corners down too to ensure it prints evenly. This is the first piece I created using a printing technique which ultimately enabled my work to progress into my final piece.

Sabha Shafiq“Molly and Leah”
Oil on canvas, 2 x 2 foot, 2022
My name is Sabha Shafiq, and I am a figurative artist from West Yorkshire. My body of work is a celebration of the joyful aspects and memories of human life, encapsulated into a square canvas marked with colourful brushstrokes of oil paint. Each of my paintings are connected personally to me as the subjects depicted are people who exist in my life as well as a depiction of the friendships that surround me. I strive to reveal the personalities and individuality of those closest to me in my portraits, candidly portraying what life is like for my chosen subjects. The paintings are moments captured through the lens of my own camera.

Sophie ColemanStep 5: Simulated Sexual Lifestyle
Heavily inspired by kitsch, pop, and internet culture, I take elements like colour or shape and use them within abstract expressionist painting. My current work has been using a ‘queer colour palette’ to explore domestic themes, exploring the idea of queer domesticity and suburbia in a camp way. I aim to create art that is fun to look at, oversaturated, gaudy and ridiculous.
