Lewis King features at New Blades 4D Model Making Fair 2023
BA (Hons) Model Making & Visual FX student Lewis Kang will be showing at this year’s New Blades 2023, a specialist model making fair where students across the country present their best work. We caught up with Lewis about the exhibition and his work. Read on to find out more.
Tell us about New Blades, what you are doing there and how you got involved!
New Blades is a specialist recruitment fair in London for model making students from across the UK. On the 15th of June, 79 graduates will be displaying their best work ranging from detailed miniatures and architectural models to scaled up fantasy busts and props. It is organized by 4D Modelshop, a major supplier to British model makers.
I am displaying a replica trench periscope from the first World War that was made in collaboration with the Heugh Battery Museum. When you look through the periscope, you look into an immersive no mans land diorama that uses forced perspective and a matte painting to create a deep 3D effect.
I have also replicated a portion of a trench to display the periscope. All of this will be presented at New Blades. Afterwards, the periscope will be permanently installed in the museum. I am currently working on all kinds of projects. I made a Scottish Claymore sword the other day, I am working on a secret guerilla bench that I will install for the public to use, and I am working on a sculpture of a big moth caterpillar.
What are you next steps after university?
After uni, I will be looking for jobs in set dressing for film, architectural models or maybe model making for product design. I am excited to see who I will meet at New Blades and will take it from there! I also am working on plans to start my own business in the creative sector, looking for ways to lower the barriers of entry for other creative people.
