BA (Hons) Production Design for Stage & Screen

Graduate Gallery 2021
Lee WardThe Billion Dollar Nightmare
The Billion Dollar Nightmare is a TV/Web series I have been developing during my studies. It tells the story of a group of anti-capitalist drag queen activists trained in espionage, as they fight for liberation for all. By infiltrating the billionaire class, and seizing their socio-economic power with their cunning wit and devilish glamour they plan to redistribute that power to the masses. I created their headquarters which is disguised behind the pseudo drag talent agency, The Dolls. I built this set to exhibit the key concepts of the show with plans to convert this set into an online interactive media hub as the project progresses beyond graduation.

Scott GurneyBeowulf
My Final Major Project set is inspired directly from the ‘Beowulf’ poem, I decided to adapt the poem into a ‘Game of Thrones’ inspired HBO style, big budget TV series. For my Minor Project, I analysed the original Beowulf epic poem and deciphered some story elements then focused on how to bring the settings to life through research into real ancient viking settlements from the 6th - 9th century.

Nathanial BrowningBlacksmiths Workshop
Choosing a degree in Design for Film & Theatre was a no-brainer for me because it combines my love of film, construction, problem solving and design all into one amazing combo. My work experience with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and Event Prop Hire opened my eyes to how an internationally renowned theatre is run and I gained valuable knowledge and skills from working at a professional prop company during holidays. For my Final Major Project, I wanted to show what an authentic Medieval Blacksmith’s workshop looks like so that it can be used as part of a period film/TV set. I have enjoyed working on all areas of this module, from the design work to my ‘Final Major’ build. Some elements of the set, such as the bellows and forge not only look realistic but have special effects (lights, sounds and smoke) to create the illusion of a working furnace.

Jade ToddWeaveworld
My final design is based on the book "Weaveworld" by Clive Barker. After thoroughly reading and making notes from the book, I chose to base my final design on catacombs under a church where a scene in the book takes place. I have tried to incorporate the baroque art period into the design of my piece, as in the book it is described as a 'baroque of bones' so this was my inspiration. I have also produced some glass domes which enclose miniature models I have created with the theme being church/graveyard to highlight that the catacombs are under a church in the book.

Annabel JollandsTails From Grandma Dog
For my final piece I made a set for a kids TV show idea I had called ‘Tail’s from Grandma’. I made a dog themed old lady’s bedroom for this show and a dog puppet to go alongside it. This set was really fun to make as I got to do a lot of prop hunting for dog themed items at charity shops and flea markets. All of my set pieces were second hand and made dressing my set feel like a treasure hunt.

Caitlin MillsAt the Sign of the Shuggared Plum
My Major Project is derived from the book: ‘At the Sign of the Sugared plum’ by Mary Hooper, set in 17th century London during the plague outbreak. I have adapted the book for a big budget TV Drama series. My set is based on a key location from the book - the sweetmeats shop. By analysing the text and characters, conducting research, designing character and location concepts, identifying potential film locations together with prop sourcing and building; I have created the overall look of the production.

Devi Jodhan SingSinbad
Growing up in a family that is and has always been artistically inclined as well as well as being big fans of TV, Cinema and Theatre, taking this course has been a perfect match for me and my interests. I have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of my time studying Production Design these past three years; from drawing up rough initial designs for projects through every step leading up to construction and finishing of it. All in addition to getting to know and work with all of the other talented creative individuals on this course. I feel I now have the skills and confidence to be able to pursue a successful career in the arts.

Harry LevesleyBioshock
After completing this Production Design course, I’ve realised that I love every stage of being a production designer. From the initial design work for a production set to building it. Along with props, construction, character design and character concepts. Being on this course, I’ve realised that the potential of the Production Design industry is limitless. I’m able to use hand held power tools, band saws, disc sanders and MIG welding. From construction of sets to design work and Illustrator for laser cutting I am proficient at both, a keen adept learner and quick study learning something new with every project that comes my way.

Jade BaadsgaardRobinson Crusoe
My final piece is based on Robinson Crusoe, I have made a 1:25 scale model of a pirate ship that I have taken from a scene in the script. I have adapted and changed it into what would be a pantomime set on a stage for a theatre. I have also done some concept drawings of a few other scenes that would be in the pantomime too.

Amy BonnerThe Beast
I feel that I have learned a lot as a production design student over these last 3 years and I have been given an insight into what the film and TV industry is like. My preferred areas of skill are digital work, painting, concept sketching, and making small models. I prefer character designing to environmental, but both are enjoyable. I appreciate and feel accomplishment just being a part of a creative team, doing whatever is needed to help to make something that can inspire people.

Amelia MitchellRigoletto
For my major project, I have create four model boxes from my own designs for the opera production ‘Rigoletto’. The opera is set in Italy and follows the Duke’s Jester as his life is turned upside down by a curse placed on him. His years of shielding his daughter from the world end up with her death in his final attempt to protect her.
Before starting my models, I carried out in depth research into the 16th century in Italy. This included looking at the buildings, clothing and furniture at the time. Combining this research with my notes from the script, I designed four sets for the performance. When creating my models, I used a mixture of procion dye and water colour pencils to hand paint highly detailed backcloths and wings. Mountboard was used for the set pieces, which added a new level of detail to the models.

Hannah BennetPunk’s Not Dead
Through my time at The Northern School of Art I have a better understanding of what being a production designer entails and would like to specialise in graphic designs and prop making, I enjoy both the designing and constructing part of prop making and getting stuck into the unglamorous and messy side but definitely one of the most fun parts, sometimes these aspects can be overlooked in Film and TV however from my experience working on set I know that these seemingly small items can have a big impact on screen. As well as this I enjoy set dressing and adding the small details and finishing touches that bring the whole set come alive.
