The Terms and Conditions outlined below apply to students starting their studies at The Northern School of Art in the academic year 2025.
Forthcoming Changes at The Northern School of Art
The Northern School of Art [The School] is currently in the process of making two changes which students and prospective students should be aware of. Please be assured that neither will impact on the quality of the student learning experience, indeed we think that this will be enhanced.
First, The School was granted Degree Awarding Powers (DAPs) by the Office for Students in October 2024. This means that The School can now award its own degrees. While the impact on higher education students will be minimal, there are some things that new and existing students need to be aware of for the academic year 2025-26:
New higher education students
· New students in September 2025 entering at level 4 (first year undergraduate) or at level 7 (postgraduate) will be enrolled on a programme leading to a degree awarded by The Northern School of Art.
· New students in September 2025 entering as a direct entrant to level 5 or 6 (second or third year undergraduate), having being awarded accreditation of prior learning, either through transfer from another provider, prior certification or experiential learning, will be enrolled on a programme leading to a degree awarded by our current validating partner the Arts University Bournemouth.
Existing higher education students
· Existing students will continue on their programme leading to a degree awarded by our current validating partner the Arts University Bournemouth.
· Existing students Level 4 and Level 7 students who intermit during their studies in 2024-25 (i.e., students who takes a break from students to return in 2025-26), or students who are required to restudy a year, will be enrolled on a programme leading to a degree awarded by The Northern School of Art.
If a student intermits their studies or is required to restudy a year, they will, of course, be offered advice and guidance.
Second, following a comprehensive feasibility study and public consultation The School has asked the Department for Education (DfE) for permission to create a new organisational structure as follows:
· The Northern School of Art Higher Education campus in Hartlepool would be operated by a Higher Education Corporation (HEC) (The Northern School of Art HEC) the first step on the path to becoming a university. The HEC will be formed by the conversion of the current Northern School of Art Further Education Corporation (FEC) into The Northern School of Art HEC.
· The Northern School of Art Further Education Campus in Middlesbrough would be operated as a separate specialist college to be known as The Northern College of Art. This college would be a subsidiary company of The Northern
School of Art HEC and all further education activities currently carried on by the FEC will be transferred to this subsidiary.
We hope that the change of organisational structure will be approved by the end of 2024 with the intention that the new structure is operational by September 2025. There will be no change to our offer and student experience as a result, we simply feel that the change will better reflect the status of our graduates, students and the institution. Future and current FE students should be aware that the title of their course, awarding body and qualification will remain the same as they are now.
