UAL 3D Design student Phoebe Allan wins AV Dawson competition re-designing striking new locomotive!

UAL Extended Diploma in 3D Design (Interiors, Architecture & Productions) student Phoebe Allan is the winner of a live brief competition with AV Dawson to design a striking new look for a locomotive which was placed on a roundabout in Middlehaven last month. The project forms part of the 200th year anniversary celebrations of the Stockton and Darlington railway S&DR200 festival. The brief intended to “design a striking new look for an old redundant locomotive, to mark the bicentenary” and was unveiled in September with students and Lecturer Jack Pratt present for the unveiling.
AV Dawson’s group managing director Charlie Nettle said: “We wanted to mark this significant milestone in the right way and thought why not combine education with the bicentenary? Through this project, we’ve been able to instil in the students a sense of pride about what this region has achieved, while also helping them to develop their design skills on a live project.”
The opportunity to work with AV Dawson on this exciting brief came from working on an initial project with the company to promote their site in Middlesbrough to visitors.
Student and winner Phoebe explained that the initial “project we had with AV Dawson was to recreate part of their site on Sketchup to be used to promote the site to international clients.” For this project students “had a tour of their site and had to note down safety features, vehicles and brands etc. so when it came to designing our model we could be as accurate as possible. We also created a small presentation of the company’s history and the creative process to present this and the model in virtual reality, to some members of the Board of AV Dawson who would then decide two models to use for promoting the company. I’m thankful to say that my group and another’s got picked!”
Lecturer Jack Pratt said “AV Dawson were really impressed with this year’s students and their designs so they gave us an additional two briefs, both concerning the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington railway. The first was given to two students, Elliott Dykes and Nicky Barrett, to design a roundabout on the entrance to Riverside park, upon which AV Dawson would install a railway locomotive. The second was a competition designing a new livery for said locomotive which Phoebe Allan was awarded.”
Commenting on designing the roundabout student Elliot Dykes “I was very lucky to have AV Dawson ask me back to create a digital model of their new train installation to celebrate the bicentenary of the Stockton and Darlington railway. I was tasked with making a digital render of the locomotive in situ, with details such as fencing and signage. I found this experience allowed me to develop my professional practice and gave me a sense of working with a real client. Seeing the train installed makes me proud to have played a small part in it and is a personal achievement of mine”
Speaking of her award winning design she said “AV Dawson wanted for something that was celebratory and eye-catching. So I went online to find some inspiration and I found a lot of explosion styled graphics. Obviously because it was to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington railway, I wanted to link the design back to this celebration. This lead me to create this “burst of colour” around the 200.”
Charlie Nettle, group managing director for AV Dawson presented the the award to winner Phoebe in front of family, friends and peers in a packed out studio at our Middlesbrough campus Summer Show.
Reflecting on winning the competition Phoebe said that “when finding out that I won the award I was definitely shocked, but I was really happy and grateful to have worked with AV Dawson on this competition and on a previous project and have been excitedly keeping tabs on the local news about the progress of my design!”
Phoebe, from Redcar joined the college from Sacred Heart Catholic Secondary, said she enrolled at our college because she “was interested in the specialist courses and also thought it felt welcoming and had a friendly atmosphere.”
Lecturer, Jack Pratt said: “It’s been a fantastic experience for the students to participate in this project with AV Dawson, to help celebrate this milestone year. We partner with the business on a regular basis, and when this project came up, the students were delighted to work with the company once again.”
“The unveiling of this locomotive is the culmination of the hard work and creativity of our students and we couldn’t be more proud. Not only is this a reflection of a collaborative project which is invaluable in its support of students technical design skills, but it will also serve as a superb portfolio piece for the students involved which is incredibly rare at this age. We are constantly striving to give students experience of the real world and industry expectations on the course so that they are as prepared as can be for those next steps.”
If you are interested in product design, architecture, 3D and model making this course give students the skills and opportunities needed to explore their ideas properly and gain the industry experience needed to carve out an exciting career in the creative industries!
