Recent BA (Hons) Film, TV & Theatre Production graduate Jack Fowler is the recipient of The Gavin Murphy Achievement Award 2025! This award is given to the student who has displayed an excellent attitude in helping others and a commitment to excellence throughout their studies. This reflects the memory of Gavin Murphy, a former student and staff member who would always go the extra mile to help others in pursuit of their dreams.

Senior Lecturer Mike Boyle commented, “there were some very tight decisions to be made for this award as we had some standout students this year. This award for the best student academically, but for that person who is always there quietly helping, offering advice, supporting their fellow peers and being a great crew member whatever their role is. It’s also about going beyond to make sure the productions are not only made but to make sure they are the best they can be!”

Speaking of winning his award he reflected “I was both surprised and overjoyed to win the award. It’s an honour to have my creativity recognised, but none of it would have been possible without the amazing teamwork and support of my peers. Collaboration has been a huge part of my journey, and I’m proud that we were able to achieve this together. ”

Jack joined the school from studying college in Stockton and he chose our BA (Hons) Film, TV &  Theatre production degree because he “wanted to stay local.” Speaking of the course he reflected that “the smaller class sizes meant I had more time with the kit and hands on experiences and opportunities that you don’t always get at bigger institutions. On top of that, the North East has such an amazing and thriving film scene, so it was great getting involved in projects outside of uni.”
