Alumni // Tony McTear UK Creative Director at Apple
Tony McTear studied Foundation at CCAD. Today he is the U.K. Creative Director at Apple. Since his foundation studies, Tony relocated to the capital and worked with an array of giant companies. From 2007 to 2010, he was the Creative Director of Fallon, a London based advertising agency (who were responsible for the Cadbury’s drumming gorilla advert amongst many others). At Fallon he was responsible for a few of their award winning campaigns, including the Orange ‘Wednesdays Are The New Fridays’ campaign. It is evident Tony is an absolute professional in his field throughout his caliber of work. Tony launched the campaign for Cadbury’s Caramel Nibbles, which saw the return of the Caramel Dairy Milk bunny and Prior to that he won the Grand Prix Award at Cannes Lions with “mountain” for Sony PlayStation 2 which showed a giant game of ‘king of the castle’ that ends up with thousands of people in a huge human pile. Tony left Fallon in 2010 and went on to co-find Peak15 a start-up advertising agency in 2012 then the following year he moved to Apple as UK Creative Director.
The Northern School of Art’s Foundation course holds an outstanding collection of alumni students who have gone on to be extremely successful in their chosen creative field. Current course leader, Sue Dewey told me, “We are thrilled to hear of Tony’s amazing creative career following his Foundation year with us. A one year Art and Design Foundation can open up unrivaled opportunities for those interested in the creative process. The foundation Diploma is unique in the qualifications system in that it is a one year free course (for those aged 18 who have completed A levels or equivalent) which is entirely focused on art and design. The immersive experience helps students to develop their creativity, explore all the different art and design disciplines, and specialise in their choice of Communications, Design or Art. The course provides specialist support in developing the skills to thrive on and identify the right degree, so minimising expensive mistakes. Despite being around for over 50 years art foundations still remain largely unknown or misunderstood. The Foundation staff are always happy to visit schools/college sixth forms to provide information about the Foundation experience so more students might access similar opportunities in the future. Foundation is a large well established course and our students have an excellent record of progression to Degrees nationally.”
