Illustration Achievement Award Winner Natalie Gaines
The Illustration Achievement Award is given to the student who has shown an exceptional attitude within their practice, commitment to their studies and positive influence within the cohort. This year it was awarded to Natalie Gaines because they “worked incredibly hard developing skills, professional practice and storytelling. They are always available to support others in their practice, helped with fundraising efforts and bring a positive mental attitude even through challenging times.”
We caught up with Natalie, from Sunderland, to find out more about her time studying at our school:
- Why did you choose to study at The Northern School of Art?
I had applied to another university, but they treated me more like a number on a spreadsheet than a student. I hadn’t known about The Northern School of Art until a friend mentioned that they had studied photography there, and when I called them to ask about the course and I instantly felt a lot more valued. I was given an in-person interview straight away and it really helped to speak to real person at a very stressful time such as deciding where to study, especially when leaving full time work to go back into education. You really want to be sure you’ve made the right choice!
- What’s your favourite memory of your time at the School (academically as well as socially!)
I have many good memories. I really tried to give every module 100% so there were good things to take away from each one. I loved the variety of things available to try, I was inducted into print making, textiles, the workshop and I also tried leather work with the costume department! All of the external trips I went to were great, and I’ve made many friends.
- What are you doing next and what are your plans/ambitions for the future?
My next steps are to start building my brand and getting some commissions. The last module in third year is all about setting up your next steps such as building a website and making promotional material and I really need to start building on what was started in that module. I also want to take some time for myself to really dial in my personal art style.
- Any advice for future students applying for the same course as you?
Be prepared to make the most of any and all opportunities that come around while you are on the course! People will remember a friendly face! It’s hard work, but it’s fun work.
