Stage & Screen students attend industry talk with Production Designer Sally Lock
This week students across our Stage & Screen faculty studying Costume, Film & TV Production Design, Model Making & Visual FX and Production Design had the opportunity to hear from award-winning Production Designer Sally Lock! The session was a fantastic opportunity for students to hear about Sally’s outstanding career working with world-famous artists, performers and musicians. Sally’s Bio.
Sally is a Production Designer specialising in scripted and unscripted TV, music, and commercial projects. With a background studying architecture, she holds an undergraduate and postgraduate degree from universities in England and the USA. Over a span of 20 years, Sally has advanced from entry-level runner roles to Art Director and now holds the position of Production Designer. Her extensive portfolio includes a variety of projects, such as designing music video sets for Harry Styles’ ‘Treat People with Kindness’, the MTV European Music Awards, Ed Sheeran’s ‘Sum of it all’ and creating innovative concepts for shows like First Dates, The Dog House, The Circle, and The Big Flower Flight.
In the scripted realm, Sally has contributed to productions like The Suspects, The Inbetweeners, Will Ferrell & Molly Shannon Royal Wedding special, and The James Corden Late Late Show. Sally’s work is characterised by a deep passion for crafting unique and visually captivating sets.
Workshop
A quick scan through her website reveals her involvement with cultural events that have contributed to the arts and entertainment industry internationally and across the UK.
Reflecting on the workshop The Northern School of Art’s Stage and Screen Faculty Leader Stuart Drummond said: “Sally was able to share really practical and creative insights into her world of work and the industry our graduates are destined for. As an experienced Production Designer across a range of high-profile projects, she painted an exciting picture of life in that role and shared advice about breaking into the industry, including finding work, developing your CV etc. Sally is also an advocate for women in traditionally male roles and was able to talk to students about the challenges and opportunities this brings.”
Level 6 Student Cait Byers said: “The talk with Sally Lock was incredibly interesting and insightful into the lesser-spoken-about part of the industry. Listening to all the wonderful things she’s been involved with has really inspired me.”
Talks and opportunities such as this underpin the School’s degree programmes to help students studying to gain insight into the working life of practitioners in industry and to understand how they developed their careers. Our degree programmes put employability at the heart of projects.
Students in the School’s Stage and Screen faculty have had the opportunity to work with award-winning local businesses such as EPH Creative and have also had the opportunity to gain work experience on Jamie Childs’ major feature film Jackdaw which was shot in the North-East last year.
