Why study a foundation diploma after A-Levels?
If you’re thinking of studying art and design at university after A-Level study, did you know that there is a one year foundation diploma in art available, which is the only art qualification that is free to study after A-Levels (if you’re still 18 on 31st August on the year you start the course).
Foundation has been described by many students as “the best year ever”; it is exciting and challenging, but also fun. Many students meet friends for life on the course too.
The course is in three stages., which is why it is ideal for those who would like to experiment a little further before committing to one discipline at university.
In stage one (which runs for approximately seven weeks) allows students to explore a range of art and design areas such as fine art, fashion, textiles, graphics, illustration, 3D design and engage in a variety of activities including photography, animation, working in 2D & 3D and with time-based media.
Students significantly expand knowledge and appreciation of contemporary art, learn critical thinking skills, work with conventional and unusual materials and media and learn to generate and pursue creative ideas.
Drawing, including life drawing, underpins the course and further skills will be developed through seminars, tutorials, and lectures.
In stage two you decide on your chosen specialism where you will have a concentrated period of focused work and develop a highly individual portfolio to support your degree application and ensure your success.
Throughout all stages the course is supported by growing experience of the issues and concerns within contemporary art and design work.
The course has an excellent reputation for high progression rates to degrees in a wide range of art and design subjects including fashion, fine art, painting, sculpture, photography, graphics, illustration, animation, textiles, costume, footwear design, architecture, production design, product design and industrial design.
We have recently changed awarding bodies too, so now Foundation Diplomas at The Northern School of Art are awarded by UAL: Awarding Body, which is the official awarding body of University of the Arts London.
Here is what some of the class of 2017 had to say about it:
