Career insights from Netflix art director
A leading art director who is currently working on an animation for Netflix shared some tips and advice about careers in the film and television industries in a recent session for students.
Art director and visual development artist Dommi Fox was taking part in the Professional Studies Wednesday sessions hosted by The Northern School of Art‘s Middlesbrough campus team where she spoke live to students about her career and then answered questions.
Dommi, who studied Interactive Design at the School’s Green Lane base in Middlesbrough from 2010-2012, is part of the team behind a new Netflix animation called DeadEndia and has previously worked for AppleTV+, Disney Television, Nickelodeon, Amazon and Cartoon Network.
Originally from Teesside her career has taken her around the world which, she commented, may have led to the change in her accent!
Here is some of the advice Dommi shared.
“What is the biggest challenge you faced when getting in to the industry?”
“Are there any skills you learnt whilst at The Northern School of Art that you still use today?”
Dommi also said that she hasn’t stopped working throughout the pandemic adding: “The best advice I can give is to always listen to your body and mind to ensure you take breaks and time off when needed so you don’t burn out!”
The Northern School of Art’s Professional Studies sessions, featuring virtual talks by a wide range of industry speakers, have been running on Wednesdays via Teams since October for students at the School and invited local colleges.
