Unique collages reflecting lockdown life on show at Hartlepool campus
A powerful exhibition of artefacts created as a response to lockdown life by The Northern School of Art Textiles Lecturer Lyndon Lowe is being displayed in the exhibition space at the Church Street building on the School’s Hartlepool campus.
The fifteen artworks have all been sourced and carefully composed and curated by hand by Lyndon, pictured below, as part of his ‘Assemblage’ studio work, which specialises in creating one-off collages using vintage finds and ephemera.
Representing a reaction to turning away from screens, reflecting post Covid and lockdown feelings, Lyndon’s new work forms part of his staff Scholarly Activity and Research for the 2021-2022 academic year.
Lyndon said he has had a very positive reaction to the pieces, the details of many of which are included in the gallery of images below: “The reception I have had from both students and staff has been a touch overwhelming and some lovely comments have been made – one student actually said that the works resonated that much with her that they made her cry!
“The works are a response to life post lockdown and are about experiences and the physicality of objects and found ephemera and objects that hold memories and narratives.”
The collages created by Lyndon’s Assemblage studio are all composed using carefully selected ‘finds’ that are sourced from home and abroad at flea markets, antique shops and vintage fairs.
He added: “Every element of each collage is applied and assembled with integrity using only genuine vintage finds, no elements are reproduced or purposely made to look old and it is this uncompromising ethos that allows the works to feel genuine and authentic.
“The distinctive personality of the collages are an antidote to mass produced products which are all too often homogenised and impersonal.”
Lyndon Lowe’s Assemblage collage artworks are currently on display in the exhibition space in the foyer of No 1 Church Street, Hartlepool.
